
Wilfried Mullens is the Associate Professor of Cardiology at the Hasselt University. He is head of the Heart Failure and Cardiac Rehabilitation Centre at Ziekenhuis Oost Limburg in Genk, Belgium.
Professor Mullens is a dedicated mentor to several biomedical and medical students, internal medical residents and cardiology fellows at Ziekenhuis Oost Limburg in Genk, the University Limburg and the Cleveland Clinic. Professor Mullens is also a promotor to PhD students.
Professor Mullens has been the President of the Belgium Working Group on Heart Failure and Cardiac Function since December 2013. He is a member of the committee on Acute and Advanced Heart Failure of the European Heart Failure Association since 2014. Professor Mullens co-chaired a workshop on Organ Dysfunction in spring 2016 and coordinates the Study Group on Cardiorenal Dysfunction of the European Heart Failure Association (since 2017). Since 2015, Professor Mullens has been a lector on the Postgraduate Course on Heart Failure, which is organised by the European Heart Failure Association.
Professor Mullens is a peer reviewer for many cardiology journals including the Journal of American College of Cardiology, European Heart Journal, European Journal of Heart Failure and the Journal of Cardiac Failure. Professor Mullens is also a member of the Editorial Board for the latter two journals.
Professor Mullens is an author of 99 peer review publications and 13 book chapters, including the acclaimed Heart Failure: A Companion to Braunwald’s Heart Disease, 2nd edition. He has also presented over 100 abstracts at International Cardiology Meetings, such as the American Heart Association, American College of Cardiology and the European Heart Association. Professor Mullens is a regularly invited speaker at Heart Failure Association, Heart Failure Society of America, American College of Cardiology, European Heart Association, European Society of Cardiology, European Heart Rhythm Association, EuroEcho, the Japanese Heart Failure Society and the Middle East Heart Failure Society.
Professor Mullens is the principal investigator in over 50 medical and biomedical research projects in cardiology departments of Gasthuisberg Leuven (Belgium), Aalst (Belgium), Ziekenhuis Oost Limburg Genk (Belgium) and the Kaufmann Center for Heart Failure at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation (Ohio, USA). He is a co-investigator of numerous international randomised clinical trials and has been part of the aCRT Superiority Trial steering committee since 2014. Professor Mullens is a consultant on heart failure for Medtronic, St Jude, Biotronik, Boehringer Ingelheim and Novartis.
