Funding Opportunities for External Collaborative Research (ECR)

External Collaborative Research (ECR)

The Boehringer lngelheim ECR Program is offered to academic and clinical scientists, who are interested in proposing a research study and wish to collaborate with Boehringer lngelheim - as the supportive partner - to further develop a protocol and analyze and/or publish the results. In addition to providing intellectual contributions, Boehringer lngelheim may provide drug and/or financial support to an approved ECR.

The collaborative partner must assume all responsibility (including under applicable regulations) and retain ultimate control over the conduct of the ECR including acting as a regulatory sponsor.

Boehringer lngelheim does not serve as the regulatory sponsor for ECR.

The budget for such studies should reflect the funding required to conduct the research (e.g. actual costs of materials and services) and cannot include direct salary support of the collaborative partner.

Boehringer lngelheim requires investigators to apply for support via an online application process.

Yes. Boehringer Ingelheim requires applications to be submitted via an online grant portal, Boehringer Ingelheim Funding Portal.

Clinical Research Grant applications are offered to all qualified academic and community based scientists or consortia who are interested in independently proposing and conducting their own research.

Grant proposals for Investigator Initiated Studies (IIS) and External Collaborative Research (ECR) are accepted.

For Investigator Initiated Studies (IIS), a Sponsor-Investigator independently proposes and conducts the research. Boehringer Ingelheim does not provide feedback on the study proposal or operational support for research conduct. For External Collaborative Research (ECR), a Sponsor-Investigator and Boehringer Ingelheim work collaboratively on the research proposal. However, regulatory responsibility lies solely with the sponsor institution. A detailed differentiation of grants types can be found in the overview table  "What is the difference between IIS and ECR?".

The same process applies for proposals that request drug only, financial only, or both drug and funding.

A synopsis is an abbreviated application used to gauge Boehringer Ingelheim’s interest in the research study. A Full Proposal contains detailed information about the budget and requires a Feasibility Check Form as well as a signed Curriculum Vitae. Ultimately, funding/drug support decisions can only be made upon Boehringer Ingelheim’s review of a full proposal.

The review committee evaluates submissions of synopses and full proposals on a rolling basis and according to their scientific merit, alignment with our areas of interest, and available funding. Boehringer Ingelheim will issue a decision, either approval or denial, to the Sponsor-Investigator using the contact information provided in the grant submission.

If your application is approved, a contract, including budget with payment milestones, is executed between the institution of the Sponsor-Investigator and Boehringer Ingelheim. Financial and/or drug support is contingent upon full execution of the contract by both parties. Other study activities, e.g. Protocol, Study Management, etc. are to be managed with the online grant portal (execution panel) and should be updated as needed.

Contract execution can vary widely depending on the complexity of the negotiations and the requirements of Boehringer Ingelheim and the sponsor institution. Please consider this when planning timelines of your study.

Yes, you may submit additional proposals, however, please note that any non-compliance in the ongoing study may preclude the review of new submissions until any issues are resolved.

Yes, we welcome the submission of other novel study ideas.
