Stroke prevention

The acute phase is not the only stage of stroke that has to be managed. Prevention of stroke is extremely important, whether it is primary or secondary. This section provides links to websites containing more information on this subject.

Stroke prevention guidelines

Guidelines for the primary prevention of stroke

In 2014, the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association (AHA/ASA) updated the 2011 guidelines for the primary prevention of stroke in individuals who have not previously experienced a stroke or transient ischaemic attack (TIA). The guidelines include recommendations for the control of risk factors, interventional approaches to treatments preventing thrombotic and thromboembolic stroke, information on genetic testing as well as recommendations for the prevention of stroke in specific circumstances, including diabetes.
