TESTING TOOLS

In an idiopathic disease, cause is not known. However, a thorough history, physical examination and initial testing can provide additional clues

  • Pulmonary function tests (PFTs) may appear abnormal1,2
    - A restrictive pattern on PFTs, as well as reduced FVC and DLCO, is typical of ILDs
  • Exercise tests can reveal if oxygen levels desaturate with physical activity1
  • Chest X-ray can identify lung abnormalities2
    - Even if chest X-rays appear normal, it does not rule out the presence of ILD
  • High-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) scans are needed for a more accurate picture of the lungs, revealing features common to ILD1,2
